Tips For Changing The Colour Of A Hydrangea Plant

Introduction to Hydrangea Color Manipulation

Hydrangeas are beloved for their beauty, and you can manipulate their color yourself. The hue of hydrangeas depends largely on the pH level of the soil they grow in, allowing you to transform them into various shades of pink, purple, and blue.

Choosing the Right Hydrangea Variety

Not all hydrangeas can have their color changed, but big-leaf varieties offer this possibility. However, hydrangeas with white flowers will remain white regardless of soil pH.

Turning Hydrangeas Blue

To turn hydrangeas blue, you need to acidify the soil. Apply a solution of 1/4 ounce of aluminum sulfate per gallon of water three times a year, soaking the ground in spring and repeating at intervals.

Turning Hydrangeas Pink

To turn hydrangeas pink, you need to alkalize the soil. Spread ground limestone at a ratio of 4 pounds per 100 square feet in spring or fall, watering it well. Avoid using hard water, as it can affect the color of hydrangeas.

Using Vinegar for Pink Hydrangeas

For pink hydrangeas, you can use vinegar to turn them blue. Adding vinegar to water lowers the pH and increases soil acidity, resulting in a blue hue. Simply add a cup of white distilled vinegar to a gallon of tap water.

Beautifying Your Garden

With these insider tips, you can transform your garden with hydrangea bushes in the color of your choice. Happy gardening!
