I never thought a photo of a woman would make me feel sick

Georgie Purcell Fights Back Against Image Manipulation

Georgie Purcell, a member of Victoria’s state parliament, recently found herself in controversy. An Australian news channel doctored an image of her, enlarging her breasts and exposing her midriff. The altered image appeared in a Nine News bulletin after she criticized the Victorian government’s rejection of a duck hunting ban.

Standing Up Against Sexist Image Altering

Purcell, representing Bendigo West, was elected in 2022 and is the youngest woman in Victoria’s parliament. An advocate for animal rights and environmental issues, she has faced sexist discourse since her election. The tattooed former stripper took to social media, sharing both the original and altered images, highlighting the manipulation.

“I endured a lot yesterday,” she wrote on Twitter. “Having my body and outfit photoshopped by a media outlet was not on my bingo card. Note the enlarged boobs and outfit to be made more revealing. Can’t imagine this happening to a male MP. What gives?”

She pointed out the photoshopped image lacked her tattoos. Her fully tattooed arms and stomach are evident in the original image.

Online Outrage and Apology

The incident sparked outrage, with backlash directed at the news station. Nine News issued an apology, attributing the alteration to “automation by Photoshop.”

Hugh Nailon, director of Nine News Melbourne, stated, “Our graphics department sourced an online image of Georgie to use in our story on duck hunting. During resizing, automation by Photoshop created an image inconsistent with the original. This did not meet our high editorial standards, and we apologize to Ms. Purcell unreservedly.”

Adobe Photoshop countered, stating that any changes would have required human intervention and approval.

Addressing Sexism in Government

As the youngest woman in the state’s parliament, Purcell advocates against the objectification and sexualization of women in Australian politics. She expressed shock and disappointment at seeing her altered image on television.

Other politicians and the public condemned the incident. Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan, also a victim of controversial media depictions, stated, “That’s no way to represent any woman, let alone a woman who holds a position in public office.”

Although Purcell accepted the apology, she questioned the explanation from Nine News. She raised concerns about the potential threat of artificial intelligence (AI) to women in public life and criticized newsroom staff for not noticing the sexualization of her outfit.

Re-Igniting Sexist Rhetoric

This incident reignited sexist abuse directed towards Purcell. Criticisms, including remarks about her past as a stripper, resurfaced, highlighting the prevalence of sexism in Australian politics.

Purcell’s ordeal underscores the deeply rooted sexist culture in Australian politics. A 2021 report revealed that a third of federal parliament employees had experienced sexual harassment.

This incident highlights the urgent need for a more inclusive, respectful, and gender-equal society. Purcell’s courage in speaking out against image manipulation shows her commitment to combating sexism and empowering women in Australian politics and beyond.
