My Husband Demands I Pay $200 for Takeaway Food – He Soon Regrets It

For years, my husband, Peter, and I argued over financial responsibilities and household chores. Earning more, I found Peter, who finishes work at 4 p.m., less concerned about our shared expenses, while I worked late as a department head. He insisted that as his wife, I should cook or pay for our meals.

Peter often relaxed while I did chores, contributing minimally and complaining. His bold claim of “investing all his money in my [expletive]” in front of friends was a wake-up call. I started meticulously tracking our expenses, covering everything from groceries to vacations. Despite this, Peter only contributed $200 last month, citing lack of pay, but continued this even after resuming work.
One evening, after a long day, Peter demanded I pay $200 for our takeaway. His refusal to cook or share expenses led me to devise a plan. When he suggested a trip, assuming I would pay, I countered, “You’re the ‘man of the house,’ so it’s YOUR GIG to 100% financially provide.” This made him realize his selfishness, and he agreed to start cooking and reconsider his views on our roles.

Reflecting on our relationship, I manage our finances separately as Peter’s irresponsible spending contrasts with my prudence. Though we still have progress to make, I’m relieved he finally saw my perspective, even if it bruised his ego.
