Why Were Olympic Athletes & Other Celebs Spotted with Dark Red Circles on Their Bodies?

The Paris 2024 Games kicked off with a stunning opening ceremony on July 27, 2024, featuring 6,800 athletes from 205 teams. Observant fans have noticed peculiar red circular marks on many athletes, sparking curiosity.

These dark red circles, often seen on athletes’ shoulders, backs, and other muscle groups, are from a therapy called cupping. The therapy involves placing heated cups on the skin to create suction, which is believed to enhance circulation, relax muscles, and offer anti-inflammatory benefits.

“The bruises do look more intense than what they actually feel like. But the benefit from it is really great,” said former basketball player Kyle Singler. Michael Phelps and other Olympians have popularized this practice by displaying these marks during competitions.

Cupping therapy, rooted in ancient Chinese medicine, helps athletes with muscle recovery and pain relief. The red circles seen on athletes and celebrities like Jennifer Aniston and Gwyneth Paltrow are not injuries but signs of this beneficial therapy.
