Algerian Olympic boxer Imane Khelif faced controversy after her Italian opponent, Angela Carini, withdrew from their fight, citing “severe pain.” The incident reignited debates about Khelif’s eligibility, given her previous disqualification due to elevated testosterone levels. Her father, Amar Khelif, has publicly defended her.
Carini’s withdrawal on August 1 led to Khelif’s automatic win. However, the spotlight returned to Khelif’s gender after her 2023 disqualification from the world championships. Amar Khelif, showing pride in his daughter, stated, “Having such a daughter is an honor because she is a champion. This document doesn’t lie,” referring to an official document proving her female gender. Carini later apologized, saying, “If the IOC said she can fight, I respect that decision.”
Despite the scrutiny, Khelif urged against bullying athletes, emphasizing its destructive impact. Supported by her father, she remains determined to succeed in the Olympics and bring pride to her country.
