Gena Rowlands, the celebrated actress who portrayed the older Allie in the 2004 film The Notebook, has passed away at the age of 94. She died on Wednesday at her home in Indian Wells, California, as confirmed by representatives for her son, filmmaker Nick Cassavetes. Rowlands had been living with Alzheimer’s disease for the past five years.

Her son had previously spoken about the emotional connection between Rowlands’ own experiences and her role in The Notebook, where she depicted Allie’s battle with dementia.

Gena Rowlands had an illustrious career, earning four Emmy Awards, two Academy Award nominations, and two Golden Globe Awards, solidifying her legacy as a Hollywood icon.
