I Thought My Sister Was in Trouble, until I Discovered She Was the One Causing It — Story of the Day

After our parents died in a car accident, I became responsible for my 12-year-old sister, Maya. At just 19, I struggled to manage school, work, and taking care of her. We eventually found a rhythm, but recently, Maya started coming home in tears. When she refused to talk about it, I grew concerned.

I decided to visit her school and saw Maya being cornered by Scott, her former best friend. Alarmed, I contacted Scott’s mother, Linda, and went to their house. When I accused Scott of bullying Maya, he shocked us by revealing, “Maya has been bullying ME.” He showed us cruel messages from a group chat Maya created to mock him.

Back home, I confronted Maya, who angrily admitted, “He found new friends!” She was hurt that Scott had distanced himself and that I had forgotten the anniversary of our parents’ death. Realizing my mistake, I hugged her and said, “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to forget. Is that why you’ve been so sad?” Maya broke down, and I knew we both had healing to do.
