Olympic Runner Rebecca Cheptegei, 33, Tragically Dies after Conflict with Boyfriend: Details

Olympic runner Rebecca Cheptegei, 33, tragically passed away after a violent attack by her former boyfriend. She was hospitalized at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, where she succumbed to severe burns and organ failure.

Cheptegei was attacked by her ex-boyfriend, who set her on fire over a property dispute on September 1, 2024. She suffered burns covering 80% of her body. “Doctors tried to save her life,” said her family member, Dr. Tony Sabila. She was sedated, intubated, and on full life support. Plans to airlift her for specialized treatment in Nairobi fell through.
