THE ENCOUNTER AT THE CAFÉ
It was a busy Monday evening when Libby walked into the café, ordered a coffee, and took a seat by the window, watching the bustling streets of New York.
After a long day filled with endless meetings and tight deadlines, all she wanted was a moment to relax before heading home for her yoga meditation and some extra work before bed.
Libby set down her iPad, took a sip of her hot coffee, and glanced around. That’s when her eyes landed on a baby at the next table. The child had apple purée smeared all over his mouth, making her cringe in disgust.

Libby hated babies. She couldn’t stand their crying, tantrums, or constant need for attention. However, it seemed that this baby, whom she found messy and annoying, adored her.
As soon as she turned away, the baby began to cry loudly. Tears streamed down his tiny face like a river.
Libby turned to check on the scene and noticed that the child’s father was still on the phone, which annoyed her even more.
“Excuse me, sir!” she called out impatiently. “Make your baby stop crying! He sounds like it’s his last day on Earth!”
The father turned around, whispered an exhausted apology, and continued rocking his baby while talking on the phone. But nothing changed—the crying continued.
Frustrated, Libby called the waitress over.
“Please move them to another table where I won’t have to hear that stubborn baby cry! Or better yet, KICK THEM OUT! Do whatever it takes, just get them out of my sight!”
The waitress walked over to the father’s table and spoke to him. Libby watched as he finally ended his phone call.
“Well, if she has a problem, she should be the one to move,” she overheard the man saying. “It’s not even my fault, but I apologize for the inconvenience.”
Furious at his response, Libby marched over to his table. But before she could say anything else, the baby suddenly splashed apple purée all over her clothes.
Enraged, Libby stormed out of the café and vowed never to return. More importantly, she hoped never to see that man or his baby again.
A YEAR LATER… FATE INTERVENES
A year later, Libby was in love. She had met Trevor at work, and although he had been interested in her first, she fell for him even harder.
Before long, Libby discovered that she was pregnant.
As her baby bump became more noticeable, she finally decided to tell her parents. But to her surprise, they were not happy at all.
Libby’s parents disapproved of her relationship with Trevor. When she insisted on staying with him and getting married, both were fired from her father’s company, and Libby was completely removed from the family will.
Despite the hardships, months later, when little Eve was born, Libby and Trevor promised to give her all the love in the world, even as they struggled financially.
Trevor took on two jobs, and Libby also started looking for work to help support their family.
THE UNEXPECTED REUNION
One day, Libby was invited for an interview at an editorial company. Having no one to watch over Eve, she took her baby along.
Upon arrival, a receptionist stopped her before she could enter the interview room.
“I’m sorry, but you can’t bring your baby inside,” the woman informed her.
“I understand,” Libby said. “But if I leave her alone, she might disturb others. Please, understand.”
With no other choice, Libby entered the interview room, completely unaware of who was waiting for her. When she looked up and saw the interviewer’s face, her heart stopped.
It was the same man from the café.
Before she could process what was happening, Eve began to cry loudly.
Libby felt utterly humiliated.
The man, however, smiled warmly.
“May I hold her for a moment? I think I can calm her down.”
Embarrassed, Libby hesitated but nodded. To her surprise, Eve immediately stopped crying in his arms.
“I love babies,” the man said. “I’m Jonathan, by the way. Besides being the director of this company, I’m also a single dad to a little boy.”
At that moment, Libby realized that the man she had mistreated a year ago was now the one holding her future in his hands.
A LESSON IN LIFE
Jonathan interviewed Libby and decided to hire her. He even allowed her to bring Eve to work, as long as it didn’t interfere with her responsibilities.
That day, Libby not only secured a job, but she also learned a valuable life lesson.
Jonathan taught her that, above all else, being human matters the most.
And for the first time, Libby truly understood the meaning of empathy.
