The real salary of Pope Leo XIV: How much does the first American Pope earn?

How Much Does the Pope Get Paid?

With Robert Francis Prevost becoming the first American Pope—Pope Leo XIV—many wonder: how much does the Pope actually earn? The answer may surprise you.

The Pope’s Salary? Technically, None.

Despite leading over 1.4 billion Catholics and heading the Vatican, the Pope doesn’t receive a traditional salary. Instead, his needs are fully covered—housing, food, transport, healthcare, and security—by the Vatican.

While some sources estimate a symbolic monthly stipend of around €2,500 ($2,650), most Popes, including Leo XIV, choose a life of simplicity and service, not luxury.

What About Wealth?

The Pope may not draw a paycheck, but he isn’t without resources. Pope Francis’ estimated net worth reached up to $12 million—mostly through access to Vatican assets and services, not personal wealth. He often gave generously, including a $215,000 donation to support prisoners in Rome.

Vatican Finances

The Vatican is funded through worldwide donations, tourism, and museum revenues. In 2013, its income was about $315 million, but its expenses slightly exceeded that at $348 million.

A Life of Service

Ultimately, being Pope isn’t about wealth. Like Francis before him, Pope Leo XIV is expected to prioritize humility, charity, and leadership over material gain.
