A forgotten suitcase, a service dog, and a life saved at the last moment

On a frantic Saturday evening, in the transit area of Terminal B at Otopeni International Airport, many people were rushing to capture the last flights.
Amid all the fuss, Lena, a volunteer with the canine control team, was making her rounds alongside Rex, a German Shepherd trained to spot dangerous substances and hidden persons.

At one point, her gaze fell on a plain brown suitcase, which appeared to be uninhibited
near a corner wall, just a few meters from the boarding gate. She paused suddenly, and Rex pulled back. The very next second, the dog moved quickly toward the bag, sniffing fiercely, and then sat down next to it, sobbing softly.
‘What is it, boy?” Lena muttered, feeling her stomach tighten.

She instantly called the intervention team, and in less than a minute, the perimeter was secured. They tried to spot the owner using the surveillance cameras, but the footage only recorded a man who, upon noticing the inspection, abandoned the suitcase and disappeared into the crowd.“We might have something serious…” An officer said.

As the zipper of the suitcase was slowly pulled open, it felt like the entire world held its breath. Inside, among quickly folded clothes and a few old toys, there was a little girl — about five years old. She wasn’t crying. She wasn’t saying a word.

A police officer named Andre took off his helmet and knelt down in front of her, tears hardly held back in his eyes.“What’s your name, sweetheart?” he asked.

The little girl blinked twice, then muttered faintly:

“Ana…”A few minutes later, the truth came up. Ana had been reported missing three days earlier. Her mother, a woman named Irina, had warned the police. The girl had been captured from a park near her home, and authorities suspected a child trafficking network operating through airports and external borders.

The person delivering her had fled, abandoning the luggage, when he sensed the canine inspection team approaching. Most likely, he was preparing to supply her out of the country hidden in the airplane’s cargo hold.

Ana was taken by a medical team and directly sent to the hospital for evaluation. She had no visible injuries, but was dried out and horrified.By evening, the airport was filled with journalists, investigators, and officials from Child Protection Services. But the most emotional moment came when Irina, Ana’s mother, was informed and arrived at Terminal B.

Irina then turned to Lena and, without saying a word, hugged her rigidly.

— You saved my child’s life… I will never forget…

The next day, the image of Rex sitting beside Ana in the suitcase expand across the country. All the newspapers, TV stations, and websites picked up the story. The main headline on the front page announced:

“A Dog, a Heart, and a Life Saved at the Last Moment.”

Lena didn’t look for publicity, but she was invited to several shows. Rex’s story became an icon of hope and courage.
