Former President Barack Obama has publicly denounced the indefinite suspension of the program *Jimmy Kimmel Live*. He alleged that the Trump administration exerted pressure on media companies to facilitate the cancellation.
In a post on the social media platform X, Obama stated, “After years of complaining about cancel culture, the current administration has taken it to a new and dangerous level.” He characterized the action as “precisely the kind of government coercion that the First Amendment was designed to prevent.”
The White House promptly issued a strong rebuttal to these accusations. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed the matter during an appearance on Fox News.
Leavitt directly refuted Obama’s claim, stating, “With all due respect to former President Obama, he has no idea what he’s talking about.” She defended President Trump’s involvement in the decision.
She insisted that President Trump was entirely unaware of the suspension until she informed him while he was traveling abroad. According to her, the action was solely a network decision.
Leavitt justified the suspension by asserting that Kimmel had “knowingly lie[d]” about the passing of what she described as “a highly respected man.”
The corporate owners have taken action. The Walt Disney Company, the parent company of ABC, confirmed the show’s suspension. Furthermore, major broadcasting groups Nexstar and Sinclair have both dropped the program from their affiliated stations.
