Celebrity Describes Relocating to England as “Liberating” and Criticizes the U.S.

Robin Wright, 59, best known for The Princess Bride, Forrest Gump, and her Golden Globe–winning role on Netflix’s House of Cards, is embracing a new chapter abroad. The actress has settled into a quiet life on the English seaside with her boyfriend, architect Henry Smith, and says she has no regrets. “It’s liberating to be done,” Wright told The Sunday Times. “Done with searching, looking, and getting 60 percent of what you wanted.”

Having lived most of her life in California, she was blunt about her decision to leave: “America is a s—show.” She described England as calmer and more humane: “People are kind. They’re living, not panicked in traffic with a phone and sandwich in hand. I love the quiet. And I’ve met my person.”

The couple’s story began in a pub, when Wright mistook Smith’s dog for another man’s. Their sharp but playful first words—“Who the f— are you?”—led to romance. Wright now calls him “a good, decent adult… a man.” Looking toward her 60s, she values companionship and hopes to grow old traveling and sharing adventures with Smith.

“I finally feel seen,” she said. Wright, originally from Texas and raised in California, has had a long career and several high-profile marriages. Now, she says she has found peace in love, simplicity, and the slower rhythm of English life.
