This mother faced laughter from others when she explained that she teaches her 7-year-old son to clean, cook, and do the laundry.

Gender Roles in Household Tasks

In today’s society, some tasks remain categorized as “for boys” or “for girls.” Boys often get encouragement to use tools and play sports. In contrast, girls are expected to know how to cook, clean, and do laundry. This traditional mindset faced challenge when Nicole Boulogne, a Michigan mother, posted pictures of her 7-year-old son doing household chores online. Critics questioned her parenting, arguing that such tasks should be reserved for women.

Teaching Independence

Nicole, a single mother of two, believes in raising independent children. Despite managing the household, she prioritizes teaching her kids essential life skills. Her older child already handles basic housework, yard work, and cooking. Nicole plans to instill these skills in her younger child as they grow older.

Challenging Traditional Norms

When asked why she teaches her son these tasks, Nicole shares a powerful perspective. “I teach my kid how to cook and take care of the house because these skills aren’t limited to women. One day, he might be a single man living alone, capable of doing laundry without relying on takeout. He may want to impress a significant other with a homemade meal or help around the house when he has kids and a partner. By teaching him these skills, I prepare him to contribute to society both at home and beyond.”

The Role of Parents

Nicole asserts that parents should teach valuable life skills while allowing children to enjoy their youth. For her, cooking and household duties are never “too manly.” She envisions her son as a well-rounded man—one who can check on a pot roast while changing a tire or mow the lawn and do laundry simultaneously. She emphasizes that men who avoid cooking or cleaning were likely not taught these skills.

Supporting Research

Research backs Nicole’s approach. Studies indicate that children who help around the house develop responsibility, learn to take calculated risks, and achieve their goals. By teaching her son these skills, Nicole sets him up for success in his personal and professional life.

An Inspiring Example

Nicole Boulogne, we applaud you for being a fantastic mom. Your dedication to teaching independence and responsibility is truly admirable.
