Roots of Her Own

Lika, six months pregnant, watched in silence as her husband, Sasha, eagerly packed for a luxurious vacation—alone. His excitement made her quiet acceptance all the more painful. Instead of taking her along, he sent her to his mother’s rural village, claiming it was for her own good. In truth, it was dismissal dressed as concern, exposing the deeper truths of their marriage.

At the village, Sasha’s stern mother, Nina, greeted Lika with a cold, no-nonsense attitude and a vegetable garden that demanded constant labor. The exhausting work of hilling potatoes and staking beans tested Lika’s endurance, while Nina’s sharp remarks left bruises of their own. Yet in that hard soil, Lika began to uncover a hidden strength. Each task completed felt like a small but meaningful triumph—a quiet reclaiming of her will. The garden, harsh but honest, reflected her inner landscape, whispering that she could persist—and grow.

Weeks later, a postcard from Sasha arrived—sunny, carefree, and signed with a hollow “Wish you were here.” His phone calls overflowed with tales of freedom and pleasure, only deepening the imbalance she could no longer ignore. Her weeks in the village had opened her eyes; she saw how much of herself she had lost trying to fit his mold. When he returned, she stood her ground and demanded to be seen, to be valued. She refused to fade back into the background of her own life.

Choosing herself, Lika left. She found support with a friend and eventually moved into her own place. With her newborn son, David, she began a life built on self-respect, community, and purpose. A year later, standing again in Nina’s now-flourishing garden with David at her side, Lika saw her reflection—not just in the earth, but in the woman she had become. The garden had taught her that, with care and courage, she could grow a life that was hers alone—rooted in truth, and nurtured by her own strength.
