Kiena Dawes’ tragic passing brought to light the grim realities of abuse, showcasing her struggle for survival and a poignant message for her daughter.
Kiena Dawes, a 23-year-old mother hailing from Fleetwood, Lancashire, sadly ended her own life on July 22, 2022. Kiena, a lively young woman with a promising future, had been grappling with profound emotional distress, and her narrative is one of suffering, abuse, and shattered hope.
Prior to her death, Kiena made the heart-wrenching choice to leave her 9-month-old daughter at a friend’s residence. Shortly thereafter, she proceeded to a nearby railway track, where her life tragically concluded. Her remains were found by British Transport Police, leaving her family and loved ones engulfed in deep sorrow.
Following her passing, a disturbing farewell letter was discovered on Kiena’s phone. The letter disclosed the deep emotional impact that years of mistreatment had inflicted upon her. In it, Kiena Dawes placed the blame on her former partner, accusing him of ruining her life and playing a part in her tragic choice to end it. Her words were haunting: “I fought hard, I fought long… [My ex] killed me.”
Kiena’s former partner was recognized for his controlling demeanor and abusive behavior. Prosecutors have contended that his violent treatment significantly contributed to Kiena’s downfall. Despite having a restraining order against him due to physical abuse, he persisted in contacting and threatening Kiena. This breach of the order ultimately exacerbated her deteriorating mental health, as she sought solace in a world that appeared to have abandoned her.
In the months preceding her death, Kiena Dawes sought assistance. Following yet another violent incident, she contacted the police; however, her brother, Kynan, asserts that her worries were not given the attention they deserved. In a bid for help, Kiena shared a photograph on Facebook depicting her bandaged head and bruised arms, aiming to highlight the abuse she endured. Nevertheless, the police allegedly instructed her to take down the post, which left her feeling forsaken by the very system designed to safeguard her.
Kiena Dawes was diagnosed with Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder (EUPD), commonly referred to as borderline personality disorder. This disorder can lead to significant emotional instability, making it challenging for individuals to manage stress and emotional distress. Her diagnosis, along with the abuse she endured, resulted in a tragic mental and emotional collapse that her former partner allegedly took advantage of.
Kiena’s former partner is facing serious allegations, including Actual Bodily Harm (ABH), coercive control, and manslaughter. He denies all accusations, and the trial is presently in progress. This case underscores the devastating effects of abusive relationships and the shortcomings of authorities in safeguarding those who are vulnerable.
