On Tuesday, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of President Donald Trump with an 8-1 decision that will significantly affect the president’s capacity to appoint personnel within the executive branch as he deems appropriate.

The majority of justices overturned a previous ruling from a lower court that had imposed a temporary halt on reductions in the federal workforce, many of which were suggested by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). In an unsigned order, the court indicated that no specific reductions were presented to the justices, only an executive order from Trump and a directive from the administration for agencies to reduce their workforces.

In May, U.S. District Judge Susan Illston determined that the Trump Administration requires congressional approval to implement substantial cuts to the federal workforce. Subsequently, the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals declined to block the judge’s ruling in a 2-1 vote, contending that downsizing could have significant repercussions across various critical sectors, a decision that faced criticism for prioritizing ideology over legal precedent.

Illston’s ruling mandated several federal agencies to suspend the president’s executive order regarding workforce reductions, which was signed in February, along with a separate memorandum issued by DOGE and the Office of Personnel Management. Illston was appointed by former President Bill Clinton.

Plans for workforce reductions were set for the U.S. Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Health and Human Services, State, Treasury, Veterans Affairs, and over a dozen other agencies.

In the unsigned order issued on Tuesday, the majority of the high court determined that the Trump Administration was “likely to succeed on its argument that the executive order” and a memorandum executing his order were lawful. The court also clarified that it was not making a ruling on any specific layoff plans at federal agencies.

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson stood as the sole dissenting voice, accusing her fellow justices of showing a “demonstrated enthusiasm for greenlighting this President’s legally dubious actions in an emergency posture.

“This executive order indicates extensive layoffs of employees, a broad cancellation of federal programs and services, and the disassembly of a significant portion of the Federal Government as established by Congress,” stated the justice appointed by Biden.

The decision made on Tuesday signifies the ongoing success of the Trump Administration in the Supreme Court. This latest ruling follows closely after the Trump Administration achieved its most notable legal triumph of the president’s second term, wherein the Supreme Court greatly limited the capacity of federal district judges to impose nationwide injunctions against the president’s policies and directives.

This ruling came before a significant immigration decision last week, which permits the federal government to deport undocumented immigrants with serious criminal histories to third nations, including El Salvador or South Sudan.
