23 Injured After Theme Park

A multi-vehicle crash involving two semi-trucks and two cars forced the closure of eastbound U.S. 20 in Elkhart County on Wednesday morning. The incident occurred near a construction zone where traffic had slowed.

According to the preliminary investigation, the chain-reaction crash began when one semi-truck experienced brake failure. The truck was unable to stop and struck a car from behind.

This initial collision pushed the car into a Jeep. The semi then veered off the roadway before swerving back into traffic and hitting a second semi-truck.

The accident resulted in injuries for the drivers of the car and the Jeep. One suffered lacerations and head pain, while the other sustained neck and head injuries. Both were wearing seatbelts, which prevented more serious outcomes.

The crash scene was complex, with debris scattered across the highway and a fuel spill requiring a HazMat team. The highway was completely closed for several hours for cleanup and investigation.

This incident highlights the dangers of chain-reaction crashes, which often occur when traffic suddenly slows and drivers are unable to stop in time. Such multi-vehicle accidents pose significant challenges for first responders.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the crash. They emphasized the critical importance of regular vehicle maintenance, especially for large trucks, and reminded drivers to stay alert and slow down in construction zones.
