A rare few can see the double images in this postcard – can you?

What makes this illusion so remarkable is that it contains two completely different portraits in a single illustration. While some people spot both figures almost immediately, others struggle to see the second image no matter how hard they try.

The famous drawing has been captivating audiences since the late 19th century. By the time it first appeared, the world was very different. Telephones were still a relatively new invention, and many modern technologies had yet to be developed.

The image was originally featured on a postcard produced in Germany for an organization known as the Anchor Buggy Company. At first, the postcards were distributed without any explanation or indication that there was something unusual about the artwork.

Most people simply glanced at the illustration and moved on.

However, as time passed, viewers began noticing something extraordinary. What appeared to be a single portrait was actually hiding a second face in plain sight.

The artist responsible for the illusion was W. E. Hill, a talented British cartoonist known for his creative and imaginative drawings. His masterpiece would eventually become one of the most recognizable optical illusions ever created.

The illustration became known as “Young Woman and Old Woman,” and it continues to spark debate and curiosity more than a century later.

At first glance, many viewers see a young woman looking away from the observer. She appears elegant and youthful, with her head turned to the side.

But look again.

Hidden within the exact same lines is the profile of an elderly woman looking downward. Her nose, mouth, and chin are cleverly integrated into the features of the younger figure, creating a visual puzzle that tricks the brain.

The fascinating part is that both images exist simultaneously. Your eyes are looking at the same drawing, yet your brain can interpret it in two completely different ways.

If you’re having trouble spotting both figures, try focusing on different parts of the image. The young woman’s ear can also be seen as the old woman’s eye. Likewise, the young woman’s necklace becomes the elderly woman’s mouth.

Once you identify both faces, it becomes difficult to unsee them.

Psychologists and vision researchers have long been interested in this illusion because it demonstrates how perception works. Rather than simply recording information like a camera, the human brain actively interprets what it sees, sometimes leading to multiple valid interpretations of the same image.

That is one reason why this classic drawing has remained popular despite countless newer optical illusions appearing over the years.

More than 100 years after it was first introduced, people around the world still challenge friends and family to find both faces hidden within the image.

Optical illusion: old or young woman? Solution!
So take another look.

Can you see both the young woman and the elderly woman?

If you can spot both images, you’re experiencing one of the most famous examples of visual perception ever created—an optical illusion that has continued to amaze generations since the 1800s.
