What Does the “M” on an RSVP Card Mean?

When you receive a wedding invitation or formal event invitation, you may notice an RSVP card with a line beginning with the letter “M.” This traditional format can seem confusing, but its meaning is simple: the “M” is the beginning of a courtesy title.
Guests traditionally complete the line by adding their preferred title and then writing their name. For example, someone might write “Mr.,” “Mrs.,” “Ms.,” or “Miss.” The “M” is not a question or a meal choice; it is simply provided as the starting point for the title.

This tradition comes from older invitation etiquette, when formal titles were commonly used when addressing guests. Today, invitation styles are more flexible, and many hosts use simpler wording such as “Name” or “Guest Name.”
If the traditional “M” format does not suit you, you can write the title you prefer or simply provide your name. The main purpose of the line is to identify who is responding.

When completing an RSVP card, follow the host’s instructions carefully. Confirm whether you will attend, list the invited guests, and answer any questions about meals, dietary preferences, or other details.
Ultimately, the “M” on an RSVP card is simply a traditional abbreviation for a courtesy title. It is easy to complete and is intended to make the response clear and respectful.
