PART 2/ PART2 I Cleaned Her House for Eight Years, Then Before Moving Away She Asked Me to Come Back Without My Cleaning Supplies

In the kitchen, Mrs. Whitaker offered me one hundred dollars a week to clean every Thursday from nine until two. She also handed me a key to the house. I was surprised that she trusted me so quickly, but she explained that she had already called my references. My former boss had told her how I once drove forty minutes to return a patient’s lost wallet, and my neighbor had told her that I had watched her dog for two weeks without accepting payment. Mrs. Whitaker had decided I was trustworthy.

On my first Thursday, I arrived early and waited in my car until exactly nine. Inside, Mrs. Whitaker had left detailed instructions on the kitchen counter. I followed every word carefully. I scrubbed bathrooms, cleaned baseboards, dusted doorframes, washed the kitchen, and even cleaned the oven. When I dusted the piano, I carefully lifted every family photograph and returned it to exactly the same place.

At noon, I ate the peanut butter sandwich and apple I had brought with me. Even though the kitchen was large and welcoming, I didn’t feel comfortable eating there. It was Mrs. Whitaker’s home, and I was there to work. So I went outside and ate in my old Honda while looking at the oak tree. I continued doing that every Thursday for the next eight years.

When Mrs. Whitaker returned that first afternoon, she slowly inspected the house. She checked the piano, the bathroom, and finally opened the oven. She stared inside for a long moment before closing it and turning toward me. I was nervous, waiting to hear whether I had done something wrong.

Instead, she simply said, “Thank you, Carly.” It was only a few words, but the way she said them made me feel proud of myself for the first time in a long while. I drove home that afternoon sitting a little straighter, knowing that what had started as one desperate phone call might finally become the beginning of something better.
