PART 2 / This Ordinary-Looking Headstone Has People Outraged

The first letters of each line on Steven Paul Owens’ headstone spelled out a profanity. His relatives said the acrostic was intentional, preserving his sense of humor through an inside joke. But once the inscription circulated online, a private expression of affection became a public argument. Some people saw inappropriate language in a place of mourning; others recognized a family trying to remember someone honestly, without editing away his personality.

Cemetery officials wanted the wording changed, citing standards for a shared space and concerns about children and other visitors. Supporters of the family argued that an unconventional tribute could still be a loving one. The dispute placed two understandings of dignity in conflict: consideration for everyone visiting the cemetery and fidelity to the person buried there. For his loved ones, the inscription was more than a hidden punchline. It was a small, recognizable piece of the man they had lost.
