PART 2/ The Secret My Son Kept From Me

That afternoon, Laura entered Frank’s home for the first time in three years. The moment she stepped into the workshop, memories of Michael came rushing back. There stood the rocking chair, its wooden arms carefully polished and its unfinished seat finally in place. Nathan explained how his grandfather had taught him to use the tools, while Cole helped with the sanding and painting. Laura ran her fingers over the smooth wood, remembering how Michael had talked excitedly about rocking their newborn son to sleep. “Your dad would have loved seeing this,” she whispered. Nathan looked at her with tears in his eyes. “Then why didn’t you ever tell me more about him?” His question broke through the wall Laura had built around her grief. She admitted that talking about Michael hurt so much that she had avoided the subject altogether. She had thought keeping their lives normal would protect Nathan, never realizing that her silence had left him feeling alone with his memories. When Nathan confessed that he sometimes struggled to remember his father’s voice, Laura understood how much they had both lost by refusing to talk.

That evening, Laura brought a forgotten box down from her bedroom closet. Inside were Michael’s notebook, photographs, his old watch, and sketches of the rocking chair. On one drawing, Michael had written a simple message: “For our little boy.” Nathan traced the words with his finger, overwhelmed by the realization that his father had been dreaming about him long before he was born. Laura began sharing stories she had kept to herself for years, including the time Michael attempted to bake a pumpkin pie and accidentally burned it beyond recognition. For the first time in a long while, they laughed together while remembering him. In the weeks that followed, Laura arranged supervised visits with Frank, and Nathan slowly began trusting her enough to share what he was feeling. The rocking chair eventually found a place in their living room, becoming a reminder that love could survive even when someone was gone. One evening, Nathan sat beside his mother and asked her to tell him another story about Dad. Laura took his hand and smiled through her tears. She finally understood that protecting her son didn’t mean shielding him from grief. It meant facing that grief together, one memory at a time.
