A dented metal box behind Oakridge Avenue unlocked twenty years of family history

The blue ink stamp on my desk had dried, forcing me to press twice on every invoice when the hospital called.

“Abigail, your mother has suffered a severe stroke,” Nurse Evelyn said. “You need to come immediately.” I hadn’t spoken to Martha in eleven years, not since leaving our family home on Oakridge Avenue.

At St. Jude Hospital, my mother lay beneath a white blanket, barely able to move. When she saw me, she grabbed my coat with her trembling left hand. “Abigail,” she whispered, “promise me you won’t abandon Gabriel.”

I froze. Gabriel Vance had disappeared twenty years earlier. “Why are you asking about him?” I demanded, but she only repeated his name. I promised, hoping to calm her. Seconds later, the heart monitor sounded a continuous alarm. My mother was gone.

That evening, the nurse handed me my mother’s belongings in a plastic bag. Among the few dollars, a silver ring, and two brass keys, I found an old municipal citation from 2012. It accused Martha of leaving wooden crates of canned groceries near the fence of the Oakridge municipal dump.

Six dates were listed, each beside the same amount: forty-two dollars and fifty cents, written in faded red ink. I couldn’t understand why my mother had risked a fine to leave food at a dump. She had always insisted we never interfere in other people’s business.

Then I remembered Gabriel, the boy who had vanished when we were young. Rumors claimed he’d run away, but my mother had refused to discuss him for years. Now, with her final breath, she’d begged me not to abandon him.

I folded the citation carefully and slipped it into my pocket. Whatever my mother had hidden, those dates and payments suggested a secret she’d carried for years. I had promised her something without understanding what it meant. Now I needed to find Gabriel—and discover why my mother had been leaving food at the dump.
