I discovered this hidden in a crack in my sofa… please don’t tell me these are bed bugs.

Finding something unusual in your sofa can be unsettling, but the first step is to identify exactly what it is before assuming the worst. Many harmless insects, bits of debris, or fabric materials can look similar at first glance.

To help identify it, consider a few details:

Size: Is it about the size of a sesame seed, grain of rice, or apple seed?
Shape: Is it round, oval, long, or flat?
Color: Is it brown, black, tan, white, or translucent?
Movement: Is it alive and moving, or is it stationary?
Quantity: Did you find just one, or are there several?
Some common possibilities include:

Bed bugs: Small, reddish-brown, oval, and flat, about the size of an apple seed. They may be accompanied by tiny black spots (droppings), shed skins, or small white eggs.
Carpet beetle larvae: Brown or tan, fuzzy, and elongated.
Cockroach nymphs: Darker in color, with a more elongated body and quick movements.
Spider egg sacs: Small, white, and silky.
Household debris: Fabric fibers, seeds, crumbs, or pet hair can sometimes resemble insects.
If you’re unsure, inspect the sofa carefully by checking:

Under and between cushions
Along seams, folds, and zippers
Underneath the sofa and around the frame
Nearby carpet edges and baseboards
Look for additional signs such as live insects, tiny eggs, shed skins, dark spotting, or bite marks if you suspect bed bugs.

If you believe you may have found bed bugs, avoid spraying over-the-counter insecticides immediately, as they can make an infestation harder to control. Instead:

Take clear, close-up photos with a coin or ruler for scale.
Vacuum the area thoroughly and empty the vacuum outdoors.
Wash nearby removable fabrics in hot water and dry them on high heat if appropriate.
Contact a licensed pest control professional for identification and treatment if needed.
