Grandma’s Genius Dryer Vent Cleaning Trick

When my grandmother first showed me how to clean a clogged dryer vent, I didn’t expect much. She didn’t use fancy tools or call a technician—just simple items and practical know-how. But her method turned out to be effective, affordable, and important for keeping a home safe.

Dryer vents may seem harmless, but lint buildup is a serious risk. It can reduce efficiency, increase energy use, and in some cases lead to house fires. Even small blockages can cause clothes to dry poorly and put extra strain on the appliance.

Her method only requires three tools: a vacuum with a hose, a flexible vent brush, and a leaf blower. First, unplug the dryer and move it away from the wall to access the vent.

Use the vacuum to remove lint from the opening, then insert the flexible brush to loosen debris deeper inside the vent. This step helps break up buildup that the vacuum alone can’t reach.

After brushing, vacuum again to collect the loosened lint. Then, go outside and use the leaf blower to push out any remaining debris from the vent line.

Once everything is clear, reconnect the dryer and run a test cycle. You’ll likely notice better airflow and improved drying performance right away.

Doing this once or twice a year can reduce fire risk, lower energy costs, and extend the life of your dryer. It’s a simple habit that can make a big difference.

Sometimes the best solutions don’t come from expensive tools, but from experience and smart, practical routines passed down over time.
