Learning what it was made the encounter even more unsettling. Hammerhead worms are not something people should casually pick up with their bare hands, and some species can produce substances that help them subdue prey. There can also be concerns about parasites and other biological risks, so the safest approach is to avoid unnecessary contact.

If you ever discover one in your yard, there is no reason to panic or get close just for a better look. Keep children and pets away from it and avoid cutting or handling the creature. What looks like a harmless, strange worm may actually be a specialized predator that has adapted to life beneath our feet.

That morning, what first appeared to be a mysterious creature from a science-fiction movie turned out to be something real—and arguably even more fascinating.
