A dangerous and rapidly unfolding flooding emergency is hitting parts of Texas after Edouard dumped extraordinary amounts of rain across the region.
Some areas northwest of Beaumont received an estimated 10 to 21 inches of rain in just a matter of hours, overwhelming roads and drainage systems and triggering dangerous flash flooding.
Edouard originally made landfall near Johnson Bayou, Louisiana, close to the Texas border, with maximum sustained winds of around 60 mph. A wind gust of 71 mph was also reported near Texas Point.
Although Edouard has since weakened from a tropical storm into a tropical depression, the biggest threat is now the enormous amount of water left behind.
Officials have warned of significant to locally catastrophic flash flooding across portions of East and Southeast Texas.
Floodwaters have covered roads, trees have been brought down, and emergency crews have carried out water rescues as communities deal with the aftermath of the storm.
More than 70,000 customers were reported without electricity in Southeast Texas as the severe weather moved through the region. Some schools have also been closed or delayed because of dangerous conditions.
The Beaumont and Port Arthur areas have been among the places dealing with particularly serious impacts.
Residents are being urged to take flash-flood warnings seriously and never attempt to drive through a flooded roadway. Water can be deeper and faster-moving than it appears.
Edouard may be weakening, but for thousands of families across Texas, the danger is far from over.
