PART 2 / The Meaning Behind Purple Porch Lights

Domestic violence can affect people of different ages, genders, and backgrounds, and it is not limited to physical harm. Emotional, psychological, financial, and sexual abuse can also be part of an abusive relationship. Many people experience these situations privately and may feel isolated or afraid to ask for help. A simple purple light cannot solve the problem, but it can help start conversations and encourage communities to recognize that support matters.

Purple has long been associated with courage, survival, and remembrance in awareness campaigns connected with domestic violence. For homeowners who choose to display a purple porch light, the gesture can represent solidarity with survivors and a refusal to ignore abuse. It can also serve as a quiet reminder that someone who may be struggling could be living much closer than we realize.

Awareness often begins with small, visible acts. A purple light may be seen by a neighbor, a friend, or someone passing by, but its message can extend much further. If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, reaching out to a trusted person or a local support service can be an important first step. Most importantly, remember that support should be offered with compassion, patience, and respect for the survivor’s safety and choices.
