PART 2 / When I Stopped Paying

By morning, my phone was ringing nonstop. Sarah wanted to know why I had canceled the mortgage. David insisted that “distance” didn’t mean losing my financial support. I calmly reminded them that they had asked me to disappear. Later, my neighbor mentioned seeing David buy an enormous television for their new home theater. I reviewed four years of bank statements and discovered something painful: while I had been postponing repairs on my own home to help them, money was going toward restaurants, vacations, shopping, and even David’s struggling business.

When I showed Sarah the records, she began asking questions of her own. With help from an attorney, she uncovered nearly $70,000 in hidden business debt, questionable loans, and an account containing more than $40,000 she hadn’t known about. Eventually, her marriage ended. She sold the expensive SUV, found steady work, and bought a smaller home she could afford on her own. It was difficult, but for the first time, she was building a life that didn’t depend on someone else rescuing her financially.

Our relationship changed too. I never started paying her bills again. But slowly, Sarah began calling just to ask how I was doing. I realized that loving my daughter didn’t mean carrying every burden for her. Sometimes love means helping. Sometimes it means stepping back. And sometimes, the kindest thing a mother can do is stop carrying what was never hers to carry.
