What My Neighbor Wrote To Her Own Son, And The Thing I Never Told Either Of Them About That Envelope 2

Roland stared at me as if I had spoken another language. He looked toward the window, toward Odessa’s house next door, where the curtains were still closed after the funeral. For six years, I had paid that bill every month. It started with one envelope I found under Odessa’s door during a winter storm. She was behind on several payments, and the shutoff notice was only days away. She was too proud to ask anyone for help. So I paid it. I never told her. At least, I never admitted that I was the one doing it. After that, I kept paying. Sometimes it was only a few dollars. Sometimes it was much more. Odessa never asked questions, and I never offered answers.

Roland looked back at the letter. “She knew?”

I nodded. That was the part that had surprised me too. Odessa had apparently known for years. Her letter explained that she had seen the payment confirmations, noticed the handwriting on the envelopes, and eventually understood exactly what I was doing. But she never confronted me. Roland suddenly stopped at one line and read it again. Then he looked at me, pale and confused. “She left me the house,” he whispered. I thought he had misunderstood. He hadn’t. The entire house—the same house he had spent weeks trying to claim—was already his. Odessa had known exactly what he would do after she died. She had known he would come looking for something he believed he had been denied.

And then Roland turned the page. There was one last paragraph. It explained why Odessa had never thanked me…
