Marjoe Gortner died October 2 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, from complications related to congestive heart failure, according to Variety, citing his family. He was 82. Taken onto the revival circuit by his parents at four, he later said his supposed divine calling was a story he had been coached to tell. In 1971, he invited filmmakers to document his final preaching tour, revealing the fundraising techniques behind the sermons. The resulting film, Marjoe, won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.

Gortner subsequently built an acting career with appearances in Earthquake, Starcrash and Falcon Crest. Beyond entertainment, he produced celebrity events supporting charitable causes. Ian Ziering remembered him as “a force of nature” who brought people together to help others. He married Susan Magestro in 2019. His legacy spans an extraordinary transformation: a child performing someone else’s script who eventually chose to reveal it—and write his own next chapter.
